An AI simulated patient is a patient persona played by artificial intelligence so that students and health professionals can practice the clinical conversation, with objective scoring on every session.
The simulated patient, defined
Every medical school faces the same dilemma: clinical conversation is only learned by conversing, but nobody wants that learning to happen at a real patient's expense. The historical answer was the simulated patient: a person trained to portray a clinical case, letting students take a history, communicate a diagnosis or handle a difficult encounter in a safe environment.
The AI simulated patient takes that same idea to a scale actors cannot reach. The AI takes on the patient persona (age, chief complaint, history, personality, emotional state) and improvises within the case defined by faculty: it withholds information until asked, reacts to how the student leads the interview, and speaks in lay language that forces jargon translation. The conversation happens by chat or real-time voice.

Simulated patient, standardized patient or simulation-based education?

AI patient vs actor vs manikin
Each modality has its place. The manikin is irreplaceable for procedures and physical examination. The trained actor is the fidelity standard for in-person exams and for calibrating body-language nuance. The problem is what sits in between: conversation practice at volume, which neither modality can offer to an entire cohort, every week, within an educational institution's budget.
